Charles Rice Goff III Biography III

Since the 1970's, Charles Rice Goff III has been producing unique audio, visual, and literary art. While nearly all of this art has been made public through Goff’s own Taped Rugs Productions label over the years, much of it also has been released by other producers located throughout five continents. Goff has collaborated with 100's of artists around the world as well, taking an active roll as a member of the world-wide avant garde community. The collection of recordings in this biographical set focuses primarily on Goff's audio collaborations. Listeners interested in Goff's large quantity of purely solo works, or in his visual or literary productions, can find many of them available on the internet at archive.org. The Taped Rugs website at www.tapedrugs.com offers several menus to help locate specific works as well. BIOGRAPHY DISC 1: MAGNETIC ROOTS Tracks 1 - 10 MAGNETIC ROOTS provides listeners with samples of Goff’s collaborative work created on magnetic tape in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Goff was a member of four recording/performing projects during that time. -Ing, Disism, and Herd Of The Ether Space were all based in the East San Francisco Bay Area. Turkey Makes Me Sleepy was formed when Goff moved to Lawrence, Kansas, in the mid 1990’s. Each of these four projects incorporated a wide variety of instruments, non instruments, genres, and non-genres into their recordings and performances. Improvisation, sound collage, social commentary, and humor are elements common to the productions of all of these groups. One thing in particular that also makes each of these groups a genuine contributor to the unique Taped Rugs family of artists is that they all incorporated tape recorders as instruments - looping, editing, and manipulating recording tape to create one-of-a-kind sounds. Membership in each of these groups centered around a small core of individuals, but often other artists took part of their activities. Each of these groups also produced several very lengthy recordings, which could not be presented here because of limited space. Listeners interested in further exploring the recordings of these groups can find many of them available online at archive.org. BIOGRAPHY DISC 2: DIGITAL SCULPTURE Tracks 11 - 32 DIGITAL SCULPTURE provides listeners with samples of Goff's collaborative experimental work created with computer software. Goff made contacts with artists all over the world during the 1980's and 1990's by exchanging cassette tapes through the post. As the 20th Century was ending, digital technologies began providing artists with new methods for recording and editing sounds. The ever-evolving internet also provided artists with a new and speedy pathway for communications and exchanges of recordings. Goff took advantage of these new technologies to increase his collaboratating activities with associates around the globe, producing sonic sculptures by digitally collaging and embellishing the recordings of others with his own. His history with tape manipulation and improvisation influenced his approaches to stretching the normal parameters of digital recording as well, resulting in a wide variety of one-of-a-kind productions. DIGITAL SCULPTURE showcases only a sampling of the artists with whom Goff has produced unique digitally-engineered recordings over the years. He has co-created several very lengthy recordings as well, which could not be presented in this collection because of limited space. Listeners who are interested in hearing Goff's longer collaborative works and/or his collaborations with other sound artists can find many of them online at archive.org. BIOGRAPHY DISC 3: PAINTING WITH VOICES Tracks 33 - 54 Since the 1970's, Charles Rice Goff III has been producing unique audio, visual, and literary art. PAINTING WITH VOICES provides listeners with samples of Goff's "songwriting." These recordings contain familiar song elements such as melodies, refrains, lyrics, etc. However, the arrangements, choices of instruments, embellishments with sounds not normally considered musical, etc., make these pieces uniquely Goff's. Many of the melodies and lyrics in these songs were dreamed in his sleep. Also, as the title suggests, Goff sings on each of these recordings. PAINTING WITH VOICES features several collaborations with other artists; however, this collection also contains some pieces completely composed, performed, and produced by Goff alone. Goff's musical influences stretch to all edges of genre and beyond. Each of his songs has a life of its own, and, thus, projects a style and other qualities that are particularly applicable to it. As with the recordings on the other two discs in this collection, sound collage, improvisation, social commentary, humor, and unique recording techniques are all showcased in this collection. While not well represented here, it should be noted that Goff also has recorded many interpretations of songs written by other artists. His approach to these interpretations generally produces recordings that range very far from their original designs. Also, while Goff recorded quite a few songs on magnetic tape during the 20th Century, this collection only features digitally recorded songs from the 21st Century. Listeners interested in hearing his tape-recorded songs or his "cover songs" can find many of them online at archive.org.

Jack Hertz presents a new release that reflects on the industry of unhappiness, the Mechanics of Blue. Entities that design products to make us feel afraid, unattractive, or unwanted. Cloaked in commerce. Branding, deception, fear, propaganda, gamification, subversion, trust, social engineering and other methods are exploited to get us to buy and do what we do not want.

  9. During the Pleistocene period 40,000 years ago, giant mammalian creatures roamed North America. Tar pits that formed when crude oil seeped to the surface through fissures in the Earth's crust. Would trap mastodons and other creatures in their molten grip. When predators came to feed, they were consumed as well. Prehistoric Tar Pit Music is a two and half hour compilation of sonic adventures into places that time has forgotten. Listen to the sounds of primordial landscapes, bubbling tar pits, and the echoes of life emerging from the deep earth. The idea for this compilation began in the Intelligent Ambient Music (IAM) group on Facebook. The result is the group effort that you can hear now. We hope that these compositions will entertain your imagination with a sonic documentary of what these prehistoric places may have been like. You are highly encouraged to explore more of the work by these artists at the links provided with each the artists' tracks. Please show your support by downloading their music and sharing it with others.

    Dark Matter - Michael Meara

Dark matter is an unidentified type of matter that makes up approximately 27% of the mass and energy in the observable universe. It is not accounted for by dark energy, ordinary matter or neutrinos. Dark Matter does not emit or interact with electromagnetic radiation, such as light, and is invisible to the entire electromagnetic spectrum. The existence of Dark Matter is inferred from its gravitational effects, such as the motion of visible matter, gravitational lensing, its influence on the universe's large-scale structure, and its effects on the cosmic microwave background. This long-form minimal ambient piece takes inspiration from this hidden and subliminal phenomenon and is thus mastered to be played at low volume.

    Biography: Thomas Park

Aural Films begins a new sound vision series called, Biography. In today's world of always on media. Where too much good art is lost in the wake of the next new thing. The Biography series re-presents artists by featuring retrospective collections that re-introduce people to those who have been working for decades. The series kicks off with none other than the ever prolific, Thomas Park. Thomas Park has been involved with music for his entire life. He was trained in classical and jazz music as a teenager, and played the trombone and piano. His listening habits changed in the late 1980's, and Thomas became interested in electronic music. After several years of writing techno as the band AutoCad, Thomas was fortunate enough to collaborate with Robin Storey of Rapoon. This project helped Thomas to evolve into the ambient / drone band Mystified. Mystified has found considerable success, both through online and physical releases, and is known for being proficient, creative and prolific. The music of Mystified is mainly of an atmospheric nature. Sometimes for Thomas less is more, making his music ideal for listening while working, sleeping or doing other things. The music of Mystified especially explores texture, consistency, and a type of variety that could be called subtle. This is not the utopian ambient of the typical soundscape artist. It is serious music for serious people. Mystified music has found many purposes, including scores for films, online and terrestrial radio shows, festivals of aesthetic, political, and other varieties, informational cd-roms, spots on many scores of compilations, and quite a few independent releases. Mister Vapor, a newer incarnation of Thomas Park, focuses especially on the hazier, foggier sides of ambient music. Find more about Thomas Park's work on his website: www.mystifiedmusic.com

Inspired as much by John Cage as Led Zeppelin, Dimuzio's music is like a sonic excursion that transports the listener into other worldly aural realms. “His work has a narrative, filmic tug that will draw you into its dark corners, ears alert… brilliant and rarely less than entertaining.” —Peter Marsh, BBC Long regarded as a musical pioneer for his innovative use of live sampling and looping techniques, Dimuzio has earned a deserved reputation worldwide as an avant-garde sound artist in touch with the aesthetic pulse of time and technology. A true sonic alchemist who can seemingly create music events out of almost anything, Dimuzio's listed sound sources on his various releases include everything from 'modified 10 speed bicycle' and 'resonating water pipe' to short-wave radios, loops, feedback, samplers, synthesizers and even normal instruments such as guitar, clarinet and trumpet. Dimuzio's eclecticism bespeaks a career equally informed by a profound dedication to his craft and collaborations with friends, artists and technologists alike. Those years were largely taken up with a quest to develop and integrate an extended trumpet language into a post-WDR electronic sound environment, while also pursuing advanced studies in improvisation and performance with Pauline Oliveros and Jack Wright. While at Mills, Djll concentrated on microtonal music, split-tone trumpet technique, and computer music. Further development of trumpet languages and ‘EAI’-style free improvisation with his band Grosse Abfahrt was undertaken from 1999 – 2010, after which period Djll gradually re-introduced electronics and traditional keyboard technique into his sound-set. The results are heard today in his projects such as hackMIDI (extreme mechanical piano music), the hardcore free-noise trio BEAUTY SCHOOL, and ongoing free improvisation in the lively and ever-evolving Bay Area scene, with playing partners old and new (including but not limited to Gino Robair, Julia Mazawa, Tim Perkis, Kyle Bruckmann, Jacob Felix Heule, Suki O’Kane, Matt Ingalls, Tom Nunn, bran(…)pos, and Karen Stackpole, as well as international players. A long running 2-and-a-half-hour friday night radio program (since 2001) broadcast live from Santa Cruz, Ca. The host, R Albert Duck, sometimes with guest artists, assembles and re-assembles various sound sources to create a living aural landscape for listeners to enjoy at home in comfort, perhaps with a cup of tea and a tasty snack treat. Enjoy a live appearance for the opportunity to hear some ear teasing delights and join the taste-test of the evening's chocolate, or in season, sample some home grown honey from the R Duck show downtown studio apiary. The R Duck show sits inside an improvised musical moment. R Albert Duck is an audio/video artist with a history in electronic music spanning two centuries, from writing generative music software for his, then new (1983), Olivetti M-10 to assembling a modern VCF for eurorack. His sonic ventures defy linear logic, often proceeding in what would appear to be backwards trajectory - only to arrive yet again working in the present time. He has performed in a variety of musical settings including: artist in residence, sound engineer, drummer, percussionist, re-inventor and software beta tester. Find more information about RDuck at rduck.com SPACEBRANE Widely known as a painter, Paul Nicholson (aka Paul-E) has been involved with synthesizers since the early 1980s. Beginning with an ARP 2600 which he received in trade for a painting in 1982, Paul has over the years amassed a room filling arsenal of synthesizers. Early influence by artists such as Morton Subotnik and Klaus Schulze Cluster, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk has evolved into a composition style involving ambient electronics and processed recorded sound improvisations that range from delicate atmospheres, to violent storms; morphing soundscapes with roiling rhythms, industrial noise and peaceful. Paul was a founding member of the 1990s chill room ensemble Gamma Quadrant, (1996 - 2000) that was followed by T.A.P.P. (2002-2004) and PRAIRIE PROJECT (2006-2010), now in hiatus. His current project is SPACEBRANE, a collaboration with Crystal Awareness. At FOG, Paul-E will have a mix of analog and digital synthesizers and sequencers Crystal Awareness (DBAR)- is creating a psychedelic world of sound with software, homebuilt analog modular synthesizers, bass guitar, theremin, percussion, and keyboards. Recently he is adding homemade field recordings from the US and Costa Rica as source material to his interstellar musical sets. Fractals, sonifications, feedback, and generative algorithms added to conventional composition and live improvisation all play a part in his star traveling cruise music. From ambient, downtempo to booty shakin' to massive noise overload his sonic art spans the full range of tempo and space. At the Fog concert crystal will be using software synthesis including software modulars and one of his homebuilt analog modular synths to produce audio fog . Of special note is Doug’s Mystery Serge, an amazingly versatile analog modular synthesizer designed by West Coast synthesizer pioneer, Serge Tcherepnin. His music is based upon the notion of “sound for sound’s sake.” He explores the intrinsic value of sound through mixtures of ambient, avant garde, rhythmic and soundscape genres. Doug received a BFA in Music Composition from the California Institute of the Arts where his mentors were Morton Subotnick, Harold Budd, James Tenney, Leonid Hambro and Nicholas England. There he was deeply immersed in music technology and compositional processes as well as being instructed in world music genres such as south Indian flute, Gamelan Orchestra and Pigmy and Bushmen rhythmic singing and playing. His first experience with sound began with analog reel machines, microphones, percussion and a Casio VL-Tone. His first true synthesizer was the Alpha Syntauri digital synthesizer that was was hosted by an Apple IIe PC. The steep learning curve exposed him to a universe of concepts nearly a decade before others. Later, he was introduced to Yamaha's DX7 and the vast capabilities of FM synthesis that he has been working with ever since. Jack is a seasoned improvisor who finds all aspects of creating sound fascinating. From the early percussion instruments to the present day hardware and software innovations. Generally, Jack is searching for a sonic middle ground between the real and the artificial. Utilizing computers, synthesizers, found objects, field recordings and digital effects. He designs his own sound with unique characteristics that create spaces and atmospheres a listener can explore. More information can be found at http://JackHertz.com/
