  1. Back in the 1970s, Roland launched the SYSTEM 100, SYSTEM 100M, and the now almost mythical SYSTEM 700. These modular and semi-modular synthesizers are heralded to this day for their flexibility and character of sound. In the spirit of its predecessors, the SYSTEM-1 breaks new ground with remarkable flexibility and access to a vast palette of tones with the bold, unmistakable character associated with Roland synthesizers for nearly four decades. 73 PHYSICAL CONTROLS. 100 PERCENT SYNTH. Meet the SYSTEM-1, a synthesizer that’s probably unlike any you’ve encountered before. At its heart is Roland’s new Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) technology, which we use to carefully analyze every aspect of analog circuits and then faithfully recreate them down to the finest details. This technology fills the SYSTEM-1, creating a fusion of beautifully classic and utterly modern synthesizer tones.     Roland Aira System-1m

    The SYSTEM-1m is a semi-modular synthesizer with PLUG-OUT capability and a unique design that can be used as a Eurorack module, tabletop synth, or 19” rackmount unit. In addition to being a powerful standalone instrument, the SYSTEM-1m has external inputs and an array of CV/Gate connections that allow it to be re-patched and to interface with other modular synthesizer systems. The SYSTEM-1m’s CV/Gate connections combined with its ability to load classic Roland PLUG-OUT synth models like the SH-101 and PROMARS give it power and flexibility that is simply unparalleled. Modular for the Masses Modular synthesizers are highly prized by musicians for their ability to make totally unique and interesting sounds. But they can demand a real investment of both time and money to create a fully functional instrument. The SYSTEM-1m takes the guesswork out of getting into modular with great sounds and the freedom to experiment right out of the box. The fully self-contained module can be placed in a rack or on a table and can be powered by a standard AC adaptor. And it can be played from any standard MIDI keyboard or receive MIDI messages from your DAW - just like you’d expect. But the SYSTEM-1m goes way beyond standard synthesizer modules. WIth fully-lit, color coded patch points, you can experiment with reconfiguring its architecture and easily connect to a wide world of available synthesizer modules. In addition to functioning as a rackmount or tabletop unit, the SYSTEM-1m can be mounted in a standard Eurorack case and can be powered via integrated case power with the included adapter cable. Its versatile synth architecture integrates beautifully with existing modular setups - or it can be the heart of a burgeoning modular synthesizer rig. A Collection of Classics The SYSTEM-1m is a stunningly powerful instrument based on our more than 40 years of experience in designing synthesizers. It’s capable of an astonishing range of synth tones, from glistening arps to thunderous basses. But we’re also known for our lineage of iconic vintage instruments, sought after by musicians the world over. These include a long list of classic synths renowned for their identifiable character and genre-defining tone. And this is why we developed PLUG-OUT technology. PLUG-OUT synthesizers use our Analog Circuit Behavior technology to perfectly replicate some of our most revered classics. They work like regular VST or AU compatible plugins in a DAW, with the SYSTEM-1m’s array of high-resolution knobs and sliders creating an elegant, one-to-one control surface that works seamlessly. But you can also load PLUG-OUT synths directly into the SYSTEM-1m and switch between the internal synthesizer architecture and one of a growing number of PLUG-OUT Roland classics, like the SH-101, SH-2 and PROMARS - with no computer required. All These Worlds Are Yours While it provides a huge amount of synthesis power on its own, interconnecting the SYSTEM-1m with other modular gear creates a vast range of sonic possibilities. Its impressive oscillator section, sweet filters and snappy envelopes are sure to be welcome in any modular setup, no matter how big or small. But it’s the SYSTEM-1m’s combination of CV/Gate modularity, PLUG-OUT, and DAW integration that takes things into completely uncharted territory. For example, load the SH-101 PLUG-OUT into the SYSTEM-1m and you essentially have a hardware SH-101 with modular capabilities - something that has never existed before. You can process external sources through the SH-101’s acclaimed filters, or load the SH-2 PLUG-OUT and use its formidable oscillator section to drive any number of available Eurorack filters and envelopes. The potential is staggering.
  3. THE LINEAGE Nobody could have anticipated what would happen to the world of dance music when inventive musicians on both sides of the Atlantic embraced Roland’s now-legendary TB-303. Since the 1980s, it’s been a staple of electronic music—it is the defining sound of acid house, and has since been the marquee instrument on an array of groundbreaking electronic dance tracks. It’s not only been used to write songs, it’s had songs written about it. In fact, the release of the original TB-303 has been heralded as one of the key events in the history of dance music. Not bad for a little silver box. THE SOUND Launched in 1981, the TB-303 continues to be an indispensable bass synth for dance music. In developing the TB-3, we’ve meticulously analyzed the circuitry of the original TB-303 piece by piece, right down to the individual circuit behavior. Using Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) technology, we’ve fully reproduced the TB-303’s sawtooth and square wave oscillators, as well as the -18dB per octave ladder low-pass filter used in the original, capturing that unmistakable cutoff and resonance character. In addition to the faithful reproduction of classic TB tones, the TB-3 is packed with new sounds that live and breathe. Bubbling synth basses, hard distortion basses, trippy delay sounds, and drippy effects—they’re all here, and then some. THE FEEL A TB-303 bass part not only sounds unique—it has its own trademark feel as well. The TB pulses. It drives. It bubbles and it percolates. That’s why we’ve worked so hard to faithfully reproduce the accent, slide, and step sequencer behavior of the original unit. But our vision went beyond simple reproduction. The truth is, the step entry on the original TB-303 was difficult to use, the keyboard was difficult to play, and special maneuvers were required for the shuffle functions. So we experimented with a variety of prototypes in our quest to create the optimal TB interface. TOUCH PAD The new TB-3 is equipped with a brightly lit, pressure-sensitive touch pad that lets you seamlessly create patterns and interact with the unit during performance. In addition to pitch and volume, you can tweak filters and even control modulation by simply pressing down on the pad with your finger. It also makes the keyboard a breeze to play. Envelope modulation and decay can be controlled with a single finger Switch patterns, transpose, and chain patterns with finger gestures Internally partitioned at keyboard intervals so it’s easy and natural to play in real time XY Play—X for continuous pitch change, Y for volume, and pad pressure for modulation STEP SEQUENCER The TB-3’s evolved step sequencer is a snap to use and allows seamless switching between pattern creation and performance. Of course, an attractive aspect of the original TB-303 was how it would sometimes generate unintended sounds as the user maneuvered through its complex and cryptic pattern-creation operation. In order to inject that element of chance and discovery, the TB-3 includes automatic pattern generation and random pattern modification functions. SCATTER The TB-3’s Scatter function features slicing, reverse, gating, and other effects, allowing you to instantly create variations, stutters, and glitches that would normally require painstaking editing in a DAW. Complex, per-step functions are triggered easily with the touch pad and a single finger. You can keep things fresh and interesting with 8 different Scatter variations and 10 levels of Scatter depth—all controllable in real time and in perfect sync.   6. The System-1’s oscillators feature both analog and digital amenities that cover a massive range of sonic territory. In addition to the standard analog trinity of saw, pulse, and triangle options, there are multi-stacked “super” variants on all three, so they can also generate modern EDM sounds such as massive chords. As with other Roland synths, there’s a Color knob for each waveform option. In the case of the classic pulse wave, this knob dials in the width of the cycle. For sawtooth and triangle, the effect is distinctly different while still feeling circuit-based. Sweeping the sawtooth wave results in a subtle phase-like effect, while cranking the triangle wave to maximum adds a narrow peak to the actual waveform, resulting in added high frequencies.   8. The battery-powered TB-03 is a direct descendant of the famous TB-303 Bass Line Synth. The layout and controls are unchanged, so it works just like the original. It sounds like it too, thanks to Roland’s advanced ACB technology that recreates the hypnotic liquid grooves of the magic silver box. But the new TB-03 goes even further, with several enhancements not found on the original model. The four-digit LED display makes programming easier and more accurate, while overdrive and delay effects let you unleash a twisted, tribal wall of sound to send the crowd into a frenzy. Back in the studio, the TB-03 can send control information via MIDI or its USB port, the latter of which also functions as a audio interface. You know when you hear a TB-303—a hypnotic, tribal sound that works best in dark, crowded rooms with big sound systems. Using the same ACB (Analog Circuit Behavior) technology from the acclaimed AIRA series, the TB-03 accurately emulates the expressive, slippery sound of its older brother, and even adds a few surprises. Saw and square waveforms are available, along with all of the rotary control knobs that help shape the 303’s unique character, including tuning, cutoff, resonance, envelop mod, decay, and accent. If you’re familiar with the TB-303’s programming method, then you’ll feel right at home with the TB-03. The original Pitch and Time write modes are included, along with an all-new Step mode. Pattern programming is also enhanced by the LED display, which shows the current step in the sequence as well as showing fine tempo values (such as 125.5 BPM). The internal sequencer can be triggered externally via the trigger input, and you can even switch between write and play modes without stopping pattern playback, opening up new possibilities for live performance. Some of the best music is made away from the studio, so the Roland Boutique series runs on 4 x AA batteries, ready for when inspiration strikes. Alternatively, the TB-03 can run on USB bus power. The TB-03 includes several enhancements over the original TB-303. Firstly, the four-digit LED display makes programming easier and more detailed, since you now have a visual representation of the value being edited. Then there are a variety of overdrive, delay, and reverb effects that dramatically change the mood and tone of the TB-03, going from smooth to spiky to squealing. Programming patterns is also easier thanks to newly added functions that include step write, shuffle, and fine tempo control. Finally, the inclusion of MIDI and USB ports mean that the TB-03 can send and receive control information and connect easily to computer-based DAWs. The TB-03 includes MIDI IN/OUT ports and USB, allowing control information to be exchanged with other instruments and devices. This turns the TB-03 into a versatile controller, especially as you can use the CV/Gate output to control external analog gear and modular synthesizers. This level of control works both ways, thanks to the trigger input that lets external gear drive the TB-03’s internal sequencer. Once connected to a PC or Mac, both audio and MIDI data can be sent through the USB port. Via its USB port, the TB-03 functions as a high-quality audio interface, providing a simple and reliable way of recording directly to your DAW application. You can keep your favorite settings and sequencer patterns safe too via the USB data backup function.
  9. The influence of the TR-909 drum machine is still heard—and felt—more than three decades after it was launched. Now, the 909 sound is available as part of the Roland Boutique series in the form of the TR-09. Featuring the same front-panel layout and user interface of the original, the TR-09 is powered by Roland’s ACB technology, delivering the speaker-pummelling power of the TR-909 in a super-affordable and portable format. Offering precise control over an array of drum parameters and the ability to keep playing when switching modes, the TR-09 may be compact, but it still has the power to move people. Studio sessions are well catered for too, with four separate outputs via USB audio, external instrument control via a trigger output, and USB MIDI. 909 Power via Roland’s ACB Technology The original TR-909 blended analog kick, snare, and tom drums with six-bit samples for the hi-hats and cymbals. This hybrid approach to sound generation meant that the 909 sounded like no other drum machine. Accurately recreating such an influential sound while retaining the ability to edit and tweak the various parameters is only possible via Roland’s ACB (Analog Circuit Behavior) technology, which is also found in the popular AIRA series. Classic TR-REC Sequencer with Enhanced Functions Dedicated TR-909 users will recognise the classic TR-REC style of programming found in the TR-09, with a choice of Step or Tap write modes. You can even change modes while the pattern continues playing, something not possible on the original. The TR-09 sequencer has 16 steps, and each has 16 sub-steps so you can fine-tune your performances. And just like the original TR-909, the Shuffle/Flam parameter can be selected using the buttons—but if you need greater control, simply use the display and rotary encoder to perfect your pattern. Connect with External Gear The TR-09 is designed to easily connect with other gear. The main stereo mini-jack output can also be reconfigured to send the selected instrument to the right channel, with the other instruments output to the left. A mix input routes external audio through the main outputs, while the trigger output lets the TR-09 drive vintage analog synths such as the SH-101 or JX-3P, or modern gear like the current SYSTEM-500 modular series. Sync and control other gear via standard MIDI ports or USB, and even send the audio of four individual drum parts via USB to continue working in your favorite DAW. Battery or USB Bus Power Some of the best music is made away from the studio, so the Roland Boutique series runs on 4 x AA batteries, ready for when inspiration strikes. Alternatively, you can power the TR-09 with USB bus power. USB Audio Interface for Direct Recording to Your DAW Via its USB port, the TR-09 also functions as a high-quality audio interface, providing a simple and reliable way of recording directly to your DAW application. You can even send individual drums to separate channels, thanks to the TR-09’s four discrete outputs over USB. Saving your favorite settings and sequencer patterns is easy too via the USB data backup function.

THE LINEAGE Unleashed upon an unsuspecting world in the 1980s, the TR-808 and TR-909 produce arguably the most influential drum sounds in modern music. Not only have they appeared on thousands of dance tracks over the course of three decades, they’ve helped define the sound of entire musical genres. From rap and house to techno and trance, the TR-808 and TR-909 have left an indelible mark on the art and culture of music. Roll the drums… THE SOUND In developing the TR-8, we’ve obsessively analyzed and faithfully recreated every detail and nuance of the analog circuitry of these legendary rhythm machines—the boom and snap of the 808; the thud of the 909; the robotic click of an 808 rim shot or a classic 909 snare roll. It’s all here. But not content with mere recreations, we’ve enhanced these classic instruments with capabilities that go far beyond the original units. Tune and Decay knobs are now present on every instrument, and the Bass Drum and Snare Drum have additional controls such as Attack, Snappy, and Comp. This allows for a wide variety of tones, from subtle ambient percussion to pounding dance grooves. Per-step effects and the massively addictive Scatter function take things into entirely new territory. With the authentic tone and character of the original units and new sound-tweaking capabilities inspired by legions of users, the TR-8 breathes new life into the sounds we all know and love. THE FEEL Make no mistake—the TR-8 has been carefully designed from the ground up as an instrument to be played. Every control has a solid, predictable feel, with each drum instrument having robust, “playable” faders. Numerous lighted knobs and RGB buttons give both real-time performance feedback and a striking appearance on stage. Pattern creation is creative and intuitive using an evolved version of the TR-REC method, which originated in the TR-808 and eventually became the standard for electronic rhythm programming. Based on detailed analysis of the original TR-808, the TR-REC behavior has been faithfully modeled in the TR-8. From 4pm PST on January 18th, we’ll be broadcasting Roland's Press Conference, complete with immersive 360 video that means smartphone users with a virtual viewer will feel like they’re right there in the room. Don’t miss it. Below is a summary of the events that were covered during the program. The conference began with President and CEO of Roland Corporation North America Jay Wanamaker announcing the new Roland Customer Engagement Team. A team of trained product specialists-experts that will train dealers and offer the best customer engagement for customer's solutions for their products. Next in the program they had Roland CEO and Representative Director Jun-ichi Miki to announce the 45 anniversary of Roland Corporation founded in 1972. Mr Miki emphasized their recent new product releases as being under than new concepts as being"unleash" and what they are calling "game changer products" noting the two recent products the El Cajon EC-10 and Aerophone AE-10. He also highlighted new products introduced last week at the CES show in Las Vegas the Go keys, Go Piano, and Go Mixer as new game changers for the CE market. Mr Miki also introduced their new Roland Cloud Service with their breakthrough communication technology called RAINLINK. RAINLINK technology will be made available to connected computers, cell phones, and other devices. The idea is to bring creators, dreamers, and people together in fun, inspiring and affordable ways. As part of the new service Roland will soon unveil a new series of high resolution software synthesizers that will be made available exclusively through the Roland Cloud. The high resolution synthesizers allow for range of expression, the creative controls, and the quality never experienced before. Especially for studio music producers and game music creators. Those who use DAWS and and those that need software solutions. Mr Miki also closed out his speech highlighting the over 40 new Roland products released last Fall to start of the new year 2017. Director of Roland Virtual Sonics Jeremy Soule came to the stage next to explain that Roland Cloud is the future. Super computing for a very low monthly cost that gives every musician a level playing field. "If you can imagine it, you can create it, you can afford it." "Everything connected is the new motto". Access the stuff when you need it. To compete you need the sound to have a career. You need to be cutting edge to stand out. For expression you need a lot of computing power which the Roland Cloud addresses. The Cloud will handle the big data. For example a high resolution sampled piano will not need to be downloaded, rather handled on the Cloud end and the user will be able to access it in full resolution audio through RAINLINK. The new communication pathway. At the moment they are in early access beta mode with whats called TERA LINE ULTRA DEEP SAMPLING instruments and have a demonstration of a high resolution piano instrument called TERA PIANO that uses RAINLINK. NAMM 2017 attendees are encouraged to try out. They also have a new high resolution Anthology Series of Roland instruments of the past with Ultra Deep Sampling of Roland instruments of the past and remastered older Roland instruments of the past in better and modern than the originals. The AIRA Plug-Out instruments are also part of the new Roland Cloud. The next speaker in the program was Chris Halon,Vice President of Marketing Roland Corporation US who re-emphasized the 20th anniversary of the Roland V-Drums and brefily introduced the Roland RD-2000 Digital Stage Piano which now offers 8 layers in a patch or 9 if you include a computer. Attenedees were treated to a quick demo from Earth Wind & Fire's keyboardist Myron McKinley. Next was a brief introductory video in 360 degrees highlighting the new Roland Rubix USB audio interface line which are being displayed at the Roland booth. The Rubix video segued into a new video announcing a joint venture between wireless headphone maker V-Moda and Roland. The audience was then introduced to CEO and founder of V-Moda Val Kolton who briefly talked about their award winning wireless headphones for DJ's and Music and the new vision for "redefining the future"with Roland. The program then segued into a new video demonstrating the new Boss Singer Pro Live and Acoustic Singer Live Amplifiers. featuring 2 channels for acoustic guitar and mic channel. the amps also integrate Boss's Looper Technology and vocal harmonizing technologies. This segued directly into a 40 years of Boss Pedal celebration video. Highlighting some their most successful pedals made. The program then advanced to a briefing from President of Boss Corporation Yoshi Ikegami. Who shared Boss's new direction for the coming year with a Limited Edition of Boss's most successful pedal the DS-1 Distortion Pedal and new Boss EV-30 Expression Pedal. Another new product he announced was a new joint venture between Strandberg Guitars and Boss called Strandberg guitar powered by Boss and is available for viewing at the Strandberg and Boss booths. The program advanced to a speech and introduction from Grammy Foundation & Music Cares Vice President Scott Goldman. He re-emphasized how Roland and Boss are great supporters of MusicCares. A foundation that helps people with financial issues. medical issues, people in the music community who need and not just performers and musicians but the truck drivers, the roadies, the light hangers, etc. He then introduced guitarist Andy Summers of the Police to recieve the Roland Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr Summers took the stage and gracefully accepted the award and in his sometimes humorous way spoke about his history with roland and Boss gear. Particulary the Roland GR 300 and 700 Guitar Synthesizers. Lastly Marketing and Product Director Of Roland Europe Jeroen Ravesloot who introduced producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis who announced the Lifetime Achievement Award to Jean Michel Jarre. Mr Jarre took the stage to accept the award and briefly touched on his upcoming tour of the US this Spring and that he's currently enjoying using the new Roland System 8 synthesizer. He particularly likes using the parameters of the System 8 as a control center for his rig. A performance by Roland's Scott Tibbs on keys, Jerry Brooks on Bass, Mike Phillips on the AE-10 Aerophone wind instruments, and Omar Hakim on V-Drums closed out the program.
