Kawai XD-5 Percussion Synthesizer

   0 reviews  -  360 views
    Description
The Kawai XD-5 is a percussion synthesizer based on the Kawai K4 sample playback + filter + AM amplifier modulation synthesis architecture. It is essentially a Kawai K4r with percussion waveforms, plus speeded up envelopes, gate mode and amplifier to better suit percussion sounds. Features include 32 digital oscillators each capable of using one of 256 available 16-bit waveforms, a digital filter with self resonance and 6 individual outputs.

The Kawai XD-5 16 hit digital percussion synthesizer. This revolutionary new synthesizer uses 16-bit 44.1 kHz sampled and synthesized waveforms for optimum sound quality. The friendly user-interface and parameter structure of the Kawai K series has been retained, and new functions and features added to increase the XD-5's music making power.

    Features

The XD-5 is a rack-mount digital percussion synthesizer equipped with a DMS (Digital Multi Spectrum) tone generator capable of up to 16 notes of polyphony when set at two Sources per tone.

The XD-5 utilizes a newly developed DMS tone generator. Not only does it use 16 bit system, but because it has a Digital Filter function, your freedom in producing sounds is unlimited. It is also capable of AM (Ring Modulation) to easily and simply produce clangorous and distorted sounds.

    256 high quality internal waveforms

The XD-5 has 41 DC (Digital Cyclic) waveforms composed of as many as 128 harmonics, and a total of 215 PCM waveforms, for a total of 256 waveforms. Because the XD-5's internal waveforms are reproduced using 16-bit 44.1 kHz quantization, noise and distortion are virtually inaudible.

    INDIVIDUAL OUTPUT function

The XD-5 is equipped not only with two stereo output jacks, but with six separate output jacks as well to allow the connection of external effects units to create high quality sound.

    GATE MODE

When you use the pad controller or drum machine which has no GATE parameter, you can play full cycle of envelope by using this mode.

    Card

A card permits an increased number of tones to be placed in memory. One card can hold 64 SINGLE Patches, 16 KIT Patches and 16 OUTPUT Patches.

Notes from Scott Morgan on the XD-5:

    From interval@netcom.comFri May 19 13:23:28 1995

    Subject: XD-5 bottom line

    Hey-ho:

I worked on the XD-5 sound development years ago & know the architecture inside & out. While the basic engine is based on the K4r (not the K4 keyboard which has effects), there are many differences, mainly having to do with making the XD-5 more suited for percussion than a synth.

The XD-5 is 16-bit 44.1 (with a few samples @ 22.05). The midi response time is faster (there are no software LFO's), and things like the autobend are exponential. Otherwise the engine is pretty much the same as the K4 (i.e. same digital filters, etc.)

    Trivia:

We were faced with cramming too many sounds into too little ROM space. I was lobbying for a kind of electro-ethnic-hip-hop-in-a-box, and Danny Sofer (the other co-developer) wanted Terry-Lewis-Jimmy-Jam-in-a-box (this was during the height of Janet Jackson's career). We both wanted Kraftwerk-in-a-box & I made sure to include all the 808 stuff and a "sub-woofer" waveform (which is great for adding to a kick drum), decent noise generator, and other synthy things.

We called the 808 stuff BOB Kick, BOB Claps, etc. Japan called up one day asking "Who's Bob?". The BOB nomenclature made it into the owners manual! This was good for a laugh.

Most of the drum sounds were recorded at Capitol Records Studio B (Neve) to Sony PCM, with some additional percussion sounds coming from Steve Reid's library.
