SyntoNovo PAN

   0 reviews  -  1063 views

It all started in 1969 when Felix Visser, a composer specialized in film scores, bought his Synthi-A plus “Cricklewood Dynamic Keyboard”. After a few days a technical problem silenced Synthi-A. Fortunately EMS (Electronic Music Studios of London) had included all circuit diagrams, so the problem could quickly be fixed. A great compliment, incidentally, goes to Peter Zinovieff’s innovative company and their products being accompanied by excellent documentation: particularly clarifying the concept of voltage control and matrix patching in one swell foop.

After many a recording session, struggling with drifting oscillators, Felix started sketching up his ideas about a synth and founded Synton in 1973. Syrinx’s features: two-voice-split-keyboard, state variable filters and unconditionally stable VCO’s… Halas, Syrinx never left the drawing board and ended in a drawer, its dummy in the dumpster. The undercapitalized start-up, veered off to 19” special effects outboard gear such as phasers, filters, noise limiters and sound mixing consoles and vocoders. It took almost a decade before a Curtis chip landed on Earth and fueled a new Syrinx design which was released in 1982. Too late, or still too early? No, just not well timed.

The Proof of the Pudding (PoP) was in eating it… We’re almost done now with the design of PAN, SyntoNovo’s Analog Synth with its XYZPression Keyboard – a distinguishably different synth with surprising features.

One year ago, at the very same spot, Synton from way back when (1973...1989) was resuscitated by Synton founder Felix Visser and technical director Bert Vermeulen. Now, SyntoNovo, presented their PoP analog evaluation synth with its XYZPression (Pat. Pending) keyboard featuring full 3D control of expressive parameters.

Positive response and practice encouraged us to add mole control facilities, like two QuadPads instead of one, allowing pitch, timbral and percussive control, a.o. adding features like Theremax T. (a very sensual, tactile Theremin!). PAN 'PoPped up' as our new synth named after the god of the wild in ancient Greek mythology, pursuer of the goddess's , also Synton's monophonic synth, equipped with a formant filter bank, released in 1982 - now of iconic status. PAN is an analog, duophonic*, perfomer-aimed synth with XYZ key-control. PAN also deals with the hassles of a modular synth and its patch cord spaghetti or fakir bed matrix pins. It hosts speedy storage of all parameters and control and sound paths in an intuitive way. (Look Mum, a 4-page manual!) PAN in a nutshell:
