Chips and Operating System
Kyma ("Wave" in Latin) is the user interface which allows you to take control of the Pacarana. It runs on a Mac or Windows computer.
The main part of the interface is graphical, but you can also use the CapyTalk scripting language in parameter fields. This is a Smalltalk based language which is specially adapted for control rate (1 khz) manipulation of sound parameters. This includes anything from a basic fader to full programs which contain step sequencers with unlimited steps, complex Stochastic processes and many, many other things.
Every aspect of Symbolic Sound’s new software release — Kyma 7 — was designed with inspiration in mind. In the new Multigrid, you can explore combinations of sources and effects with no interruption in the audio signal; in the Wave Editor Gallery, a single click automatically generates massive numbers of patches all based on your original sample; the new Parameter Assistant, Capytalk Reference, Inspiration tool, and web-based Questions and Answers make it easy to get up to speed quickly and get your questions answered when you need it. Derive even more inspiration from the Kyma Community Sound Library accessible from the Help menu in Kyma 7.
There’s nothing quite as daunting as a blank screen or silent speakers — it can be like the sound designer’s version of writer’s block. Once you have a starting point, though, it’s easier for inspiration to kick in. That’s when you can start tweaking and refining! Kyma 7 doesn’t do the sound design or composing for you; what it does do is to provide some initial material to help kick things off. Because once you get that initial inspiration, you’ll be off and running!

In 1990, we started Symbolic Sound in a student apartment, building the first Capybaras at the kitchen table and working at desks made out of rejected doors from a lumber yard.
Like most artists/engineers/scientists and others who are passionate about their vocation, we’re driven by ideas and the desire to continuously (some might say obsessively) develop and refine our creations.
Kyma 7 represents three years of continuous development, creation, refinement, and close interaction with our alpha testers; this was followed by a grueling test period with our beta testers and preceded by 30 years of passion for sound (guided by graduate degrees in computer science, electrical engineering and music composition).
For us, it’s all about the sound, it’s about the ideas, and it’s about learning and developing our product and ourselves. Some companies sell whatever it takes to make money and please shareholders; we sell the results of our life’s work in order to make it possible for us to continue to refine and improve on that work and to share our results with others, so that they, in turn, can use it in their own creative or scientific work. Our biggest satisfaction comes from hearing how you’ve used Kyma in your own life’s work and learning even more from all of your experiences.
Thank you for caring about creativity, imagination, and high-quality sound!
